Beyond The Crates: An Alternative Approach to Sampling in Hip-Hop Production

This my final-year ISM (Independent Project for Music & Sound Recording) submission. The project expands the notion of sampling in hip-hop beyond direct digital extraction, instead using traditional recording techniques to craft original compositions in the style of soul, R&B, and funk, which are then flipped into three hip-hop tracks. The formula becomes: sample to create a sample to be sampled.

Aside from contributions to composition and live instrumentation, every stage of the project is my own work, spanning recording, mixing, mastering, and beat production. The EP features rap verses from Rhymekhamhaeng and Réjizz, two of Thailand's most exciting emerging rappers, and stands as a strong reflection of my expertise across sound engineering and sample-based hip-hop production.

Mercurialscape is an electronic music EP derived from the word "mercurial," describing a person of unpredictable, rapidly shifting moods. The EP charts a journey through an imagined dystopian future using the sonic palette of the past, drawing on techniques such as tape cutting in the tradition of musique concrète, analogue drum machines, and synthesisers. Created alongside Dylan Hooper and Louis Quillian as part of my third-year Sonic Fiction submission, my contributions centred on mixing and mastering, with some involvement in production.

Losing Round (short Film)

I was involved in editing and mixing the sound for a short film, Losing Round, directed by Boonyapran Adsatit, an up-and-coming director and a close friend of mine. The film follows a young boxer's journey as he fights his way through family and societal pressures, ultimately stepping into the final round in pursuit of glory.
This was one of my first experiences editing and creatively mixing sound for a short film, crafting an immersive soundstage that goes well beyond the post-production practices I'm accustomed to in my usual work producing and mixing music records.

Methin The Musical (Official Soundtrack)

Hero Bhumidham

I had the privilege of producing, recording, mixing, and mastering the soundtrack for a musical production organised by Thai students in London. All recordings were completed in a home setup using an SM57 microphone and a Volt 2 interface. Tracks include covers and originals

This is a collection of recordings from my WAMPTA (Western Art Music Production Techniques and Aesthetics) module, which focuses on acoustic recording and mixing within the classical tradition, emphasising stereo miking and natural acoustic spaces.

I've done research and drawn inspiration from classical acoustic techniques used by ECM and Decca Records, and artists like Pat Metheny, going into this project.

This is my second-year coursework for the POPTA (Popular Music Recording Techniques and Aesthetics) module. Tasked with re-creating Marvin Gaye’s Mercy Mercy Me as closely to the original as possible. Through extensive research into Motown’s recording, mixing, and mastering techniques, as well as the specific gear used, I tracked and processed each instrument to match the original sonically. This project significantly developed and refined my skills in recording and post-production as an engineer.
